The minute the girl realizes that she has no idea what a Hawaiian Tiki-Head is, the Hawaiian Tiki-Head begins to possess her into falling in love with the boy. Also, when the boy's father gave the Hawaiian Tiki-Head to the boy it was for him to cherish and not for him to share his secrets with anyone. Once he started to share his secrets with the girl, the Hawaiian Tiki-Head, we see many changes occur in their friendship. There is a tragic car accident that they are involved with. Then we see the boy in the hospital and he is covered with bandages from head to toe. The doctor diagnosises him deaf. After that we see him go through many behavior stages. When he realizes that he can only see his parent's legal guardian's lips move, and he cannot hear her, he begins to struggle accepting his new life as being deaf. The boy then meets his speech therapy psychologist and learns to speak American Sign Language. There is also a complete change of motherhood that we see his parent legal guardian the transgender go through. Instead of being buddy pal and best friends with the boy she becomes to live her life as a mother. This is where
she becomes nurturing to the boy. She changes her complete behavior from being a caddy mother or a drag queen to becoming a conservative middle class mother. She makes him realize that struggling being deaf is not going to change his outlook on life; It does not stop him from attending college and interacting in public places. As we see the boy finally accept his new life as being deaf his best friend is still obsessed with him. She realizes that the boy's new life as being deaf has changed his outlook on life; He no longer uses chemical substances and he can not help her in her living community. Since she realizes that he cannot help her in the living community as he could at one time she takes the boy's life.
